Dogs off leash are becoming a concern for many Squamish residents. Hey I love dogs, but it’s not fair to them, to not have more and larger off-leash areas where humans know they might come in contact with off leash dogs. A home day care provider shouldn’t have to guess which parks might have off leash dogs running in them.
People should be aware that Squamish has no jurisdiction over crown land, so places like the Dyke or many trails just can’t be enforced. We can, however, increase by-law enforcement on municipal property in conjunction with providing designated areas for dogs to play and run off leash.
Many people say that would require fencing, but in Vancouver most of the off leash areas are simply signed in parks. If you go there on a skateboard, you should be aware the dogs are loose.
I would love to start a dialogue with dog owners and staff about which areas might be suitable for off leash dog fun.
